JOAN GIORDANO

“Working with paper is visceral and contemplative for me. The watery process is meditative. The malleable pulp produces an organic tactile result important to my work and its metaphoric meaning. Equally important is form and tension. This I achieve by fusing metal within and around the paper – a marriage of opposites. For many years I was a painter and printmaker continually experimenting with materials. Forming hand-made paper seemed a natural development into sculpture. I have been working with hand-made paper for 20 years now and still discover exciting new ways to stretch the medium.”

Joan Giordano received a scholarship to the Museum of Modern Art and a fellowship to Hunter Collage, both in New York City. She earned her Master of Fine Art from Pratt Institute, NY. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally.

She has taught painting, printmaking and design at LaGuardia Community College, Union College and the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York. She has been invited as a panel moderator and to present lectures and workshops for universities and professional artist’s organizations in the United States, Japan, Italy and France. Joan has severed as a juror for the Department of Cultural Affairs of New York City, the New York State Council for the Arts and numerous national museum competitions. A member of the board of directors of New York Artists Equity, Joan is also listed in “Who’s Who of American Women”.
